A ubiquitous coenzyme that acts as an electron donor in many reactions utilizing dehydrogenases and reductases. It is produced by the reduction of the electron acceptor NADP+. The following biological pathways involve NADPH: carbon dioxide to form carbohydrates during photosynthesis, maintenance of high levels of reduced glutathione in red blood cells, and reduction of thioredoxin.
