Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila) is A gram-negative, anaerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming and oval-shaped bacterium. LPS from A. muciniphila stimulates the production of NF-κB-dependent embryonic cell alkaline phosphatase (SEAP) through TLR4. In addition, it induces IL-8, IL-6 and very small amounts of IL-10 and TNF-α in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). A. muciniphila stimulation of intestinal cells to produce IL-8 was shown to be significantly lower (100 times) than E. coli stimulation. Low pro-inflammatory activity keeps the mucosal associated immune system at an appropriate level to produce mucosal homeostasis.
