Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is located in the outer layer of the membrane and is exposed on the cell surface in non-encapsulated strains. They help maintain the integrity of the outer membrane and protect the cells from bile salts and lipophilic antibiotics. The product is extracted from Klebsiella pneumoniae by phenol. The source strain is ATCC 15380
