Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) are complex glycolipids containing a variety of components. Enterobacteriaceae, such as E. coli, have A highly conserved lipid A attached to the antigen O-polysaccharide. Hydrophobic lipid A is the outermost component of lipopolysaccharide and plays an important role in its biological properties. Short nuclear oligosaccharides (core OS) are found to attach to lipid A. Enterobacterium contains antigenic, repetition-structured O-polysaccharides (O-PS) attached to the distal nuclear OS, resulting in smooth LPS. O-PS in E. coli contains ~ 170 different antigens that interact with the host immune system. Based on the core OS structure of E. coli, they are named K-12 and R1 through R4, respectively.
