A six-carbon sugar. And can be considered a methylpentose sugar. The majority of fucose in nature is L-fucose, and D-configuration fucose is only found in some saccharides as a rare sugar. L-fucose is abundant in seaweed and gum, and is also found in polysaccharides of some bacteria. Fucose, as a component of the sugar chain in glycoprotein, widely exists on the plasma membrane of various cell types. Fucose has one less hydroxyl group on the sixth carbon atom than ordinary hexocarbon sugar, so fucose is less hydrophilic and more hydrophobic than other monosaccharides. Fucose in the molecules of certain blood group substances is a marker of certain blood groups. Fucose is usually extracted from seaweed, which is first treated with acid, neutralized, and precipitated in the form of phenylhydrazone. After removing phenylhydrazine, α-L-fucose crystals can be obtained.
