Xylan, a polyfive-carbon sugar, is a kind of hemicellulose. It is widely present in plant cell walls and is the second most abundant carbohydrate in nature after cellulose. "It is a white amorphous powder, with a molecular weight of about 30000 (200 sugar units), linked by xylose red β-1, 4-glycosidic bond. It is soluble in dilute alkali solution and has optical rotation [α]D-71.2° to -109.5°, depending on the sample." It is found in the stems and husks of land and sea plants. Pure xylan can be prepared by extracting it from the above materials with dilute alkali and then precipitating it by adding acid to PH 4.2.
